What an emergency locksmith actually does

'Emergency locksmith' sounds dramatic. Most calls are ordinary problems that just can't wait until Monday.

The usual jobs

  • Opening a home, car or office when the keys are inside or lost
  • Extracting a key that snapped in the lock
  • Replacing a lock that failed and won't secure
  • Making a door lockable again after a break-in

What they won't do

A legitimate locksmith won't open a door for someone who can't show they live or work there, and won't touch federal or government building locks. If the situation involves danger, they'll tell you to call 911.

Proof they'll ask for

An ID with the address, a lease, mail or a utility bill. If it's all inside, they'll check once the door is open.

How pricing works

On our sheet: a $29.00 service call fee plus labor starting at $19.00 for lockouts. Hardware is extra. Ask for the approximate estimate on the phone and confirm the price before work starts.

In DC specifically

Building access is half the battle: concierges, buzzers, garages. Have those details ready. See the emergency page.

Talk to dispatch

Give the street address and the nearest corner, and say whether there's a concierge, an English-basement entrance or an alley door.
