Rowhouses and English basements

A rowhouse usually has a front door up the steps, an English-basement door below, a rear door to a small yard and often an alley gate. When the basement is a rental unit, owners often want it keyed separately with their own master key.

Condo units

In a condo, your unit door is yours, but the lobby, garage and mailroom belong to the association. For a lockout, tell dispatch whether a concierge can let the locksmith upstairs.

Older hardware

Many older DC houses still have mortise locks — a box lock set inside the door edge. They are repairable and rekeyable, and replacing them usually means more woodwork than people expect. Ask about repair first.

Moving in

Rekey on day one. Previous owners, tenants, dog walkers and contractors may all have copies.

Talk to dispatch

Give the street address and the nearest corner, and say whether there's a concierge, an English-basement entrance or an alley door.

Plate 04 · Questions

Questions about residential service

Can a mortise lock be rekeyed?

Usually. The cylinder unscrews from the lock body and is repinned like any other.

Can my basement tenant have a different key?

Yes, with a master key for you if the cylinders allow it.

I rent. Can I change the lock?

Check your lease; most landlords must keep a working key.
